Step by Step Guide to Knee Replacement

What happens when you return home after the surgery?

When you’ll return home after the surgery, you will be able to walk around with the help of a walker or even crutches. However, for the first 3 to 6 weeks, you’re going to need assistance and supervision while cooking, bathing, and performing other routine household chores.

If you live all by yourself, it is highly advisable that you move into a rehab centre until you can become self-sufficient again and can perform your routine activities without any help.

What Happens During a Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from the knee. Then the doctor attaches metal implants to the ends of the thigh and calf bones. A plastic spacer goes between the metal pieces and helps the new joint move smoothly.

How long will you stay in the hospital?

In most cases, the patients are kept in the hospital for many nights after their knee replacement surgery. You will be given some pain killing medications, and it is highly advisable for you to try to move your leg soon after the surgery. By moving your leg, you can increase the blood flow received by the muscles inside your leg, and this will also aid in reducing the risk of swelling.

Keep yourself Active & Moving

Taking ample amounts of rest after a knee replacement surgery is important, however, doctors also advise patients to be active in the weeks after completing their rest in order to fully enjoy and rejuvenate their new knee. You see, taking too much rest will actually slow down the process of healing, and you’re going to get tired of overdoing the rest anyway. So, try to move around as much as you can, take small steps inside the house, and gradually move on towards taking walks in the park or the street, and performing exercises that are recommended by your physical therapist.

Physical Therapy

Doctors usually recommend physical therapy after undergoing a knee replacement surgery, and this normally includes exercises that build up your core strength, along with making you more flexible. You can always join a physical therapy centre, or perform the exercises in the comfort of your home. Just be sure to consult a good physical therapist, and learn how to perform the moves the correct way. It is highly advisable to continue performing physical therapy according to the duration recommended by your doctor, usually, it is essential to continue for at least 2 months following the surgery.
