10 Wonderful Achievements of NASA

NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency working under the Unites States government. The body is responsible for aero scope and aeronautics research and the civilian space programs. The aim of the department is to explore different parts of space and gather useful information about universe. Using its advanced and technical innovations, it has gather significant information about the climate of the Earth. It primary purpose still remains to serve the society.

Since its formation in 1958, the agency has accomplishment several achievements that makes it one of the renowned department under government. The following articles throws light on the 10 awesome achievements of NASA which are:

  1. The Space Shuttle Program

NASA convened its space shuttle program in 1972 which was destined to end in 2011. Under this program that ran for almost 30 years the agency sent around 300 astronauts in the low-Earth orbits. The program was a great success to gain information regarding the Earth and its orbits. Also, it helped to gather information about the space and various processes.

2. Apollo 11

Apollo holds significance because it was the first manned mission for landing on the surface of moon. NASA holds the title of being the first to win this space race as it successfully landed the first human on moon. Accomplishing its primary mission to land a human on moon and then its safe return to the surface of Earth, it paved way for many Apollo lunar landings.

3. Cassini

The program was a joint venture of NASA, ESA and ASI IN 1997. This is known to be one of the heaviest, largest and most complex spacecraft to be ever built. Apart from that, it was the first spacecraft to use solid recorders without any moving part. The primary goal of this collaborative mission was to study the planet Saturn and various processes going in it. The program was planned to come in end by 2017. This was a huge success as it helped in gathering beautiful pictures of the huge gas ball, solar system and the various moons of the Saturn planet.

4. Juno

The program was planned to study one of the planets of the solar system. The program was same as Cassini but this was meant to be for the Jupiter. The probe entered the orbit on July, 4, 2016 and is scheduled to complete the number of flybys of the planet and thus capturing information about the planet. Jupiter is one of the largest planets of the solar system and this program not only helps in extracting information about this planet and its moons but also about the solar system.

5. New Horizons

Pluto is one of the last planets of the solar system and according to many researchers it has now become extinct. Knowing about the planet has always been a mystery and ongoing research is being carried out to know about its components and processes. New Horizons was one such program to study the planet and after being in testing phase for nine years it was sent in the planet’s orbit in July 2015. It helped gather information about the planet and useful data that will help the researchers to explore more about it.

6. Hubble Space Telescope

The program was a collaborative effort of NASA, ESA and Space Telescope Science Institute and has been one of the successful missions carried under NASA supervision. The telescope was placed in the low Earth orbits but has provided us with innumerous images and information about the space and the solar system. What a great gift this project has been for exploring the space!

7. Voyager

Exploring the solar system is not an easy task to perform. Several missions have been conducted by the Voyager mission is one of the great successes. It travels at a great speed across the solar system and gathers information through the objects its passes by. The probes of this mission were launched in 1977. In 2012, the data revealed that the Voyager 1 has entered the interstellar space, leaving the solar system. This was one of the first human-made object to perform this task.

8. The Kepler mission

One of the greatest mission of NASA is the Kepler mission. It was a spacecraft that was launched in March 2009 which gathered information about the skies, exoplanets and everything in space that could hold life. These stars are rocky in their form, have a comparable size to Earth at a particular distance from their star that will allow liquid water on the surface. Under these conditions, the mission has been able to find 2330 Kepler planets and 4696 other planets that meet these circumstances.

9. Mars Rover

Mars got rovers as Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto and Mercury got probes. These rovers are a great source of information about the planet. The various processes, its moon and other processes are under investigation and research due to this project. This will pave way for the manned mission in the near future and help in further exploration.

10. International Space Station

This project is another collaborative mission that involves NASA, JAXA, ESA, CSA and Roscosmos. It commenced its operation in 2000 and allows the astronauts to conduct experiments in the low-Earth orbit. This has proven to be a great source of information. Following this, the researchers gained information for not only microgravity but also the conditions below the surface of Earth.

Since its beginning, the goals of the NASA agency are very clear and lofty and aim to expand the space knowledge to humans, carry instruments and objects to space and coordinate with the international agencies to address the space discoveries and advancements. Since its working for more than 60 years now, it has been able to achieve all its goals and stills aims to solve the biggest mysteries of space.  The accomplishments of the agency has helped the scientific and science community a lot to gather information regarding several processes in space.
